The Suzuki XR23 race bike on which Barry Sheene won the 1978 MCN Superbike Championship on sold for £106,200 at the Charterhouse auction of classic motorcycles at the Haynes Motor Museum on 12th March.
“The successful buyer was not expecting to attend the auction as a big trip to New Zealand had been planned but this all changed with America and Iran so he came to us instead!” Commented George Beale.

The bike was owned by Suzuki until 1986 when it was purchased by the Charterhouse vendor who lives in Ireland and is reducing his collection due to advancing years.
The new owner of this historic race bike plans to parade the Suzuki at Goodwood this year which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of when Barry Sheene won his first world championship.
Charterhouse are now accepting further entries for their next specialist classic motorcycle at Haynes on 18th June for which they already have over 50 bikes consigned.
