Mighty MGs

  • by

The Charterhouse auction of classic and vintage cars on Wednesday 11th April has a group of MG’s dating from 1930 up to 1974.

“MG, the initials for Morris Garage, as a marque has been in the heart of this nation since its formation in the early 1920’s.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “Production in the early years was all about two seater sports cars and in our auction we have pulled together a fabulous selection of MG’s from several collections from across the West Country representing some 44 years of British sports car production.”

The earliest MG in the auction is a 1930 MG M-Type Double Twelve. Finished in British racing green, this pretty looking vintage MG has been lovingly and painstakingly restored by its owner over the past decade. In all probability now being in a better than new condition, this early MG is estimated at £38,000-42,000*.

Next up is a 1933 MG J2 two seater sports. Coming to the Charterhouse auction from its owner of over 40 years, who bought the car as an undergraduate studying at Oxford, it is very much in an original condition and estimated at £25,000-28,000*.

This is then followed with a 1936 MG TA two seater sports. Being one of just 3,003 TA’s made this rare little pre-war MG has been fully restored and is estimated at £26,000-28,000*.

From the post-war period there is a 1961 MGA 1600. Finished in Chariot red with a black leather interior, this car was subject to a body off restoration in 1995 and has been used sparingly since. With continuous history and a recent engine re-build by an MG specialist this coupe is estimated at £18,500-20,500*

Finally, and jumping a few years to 1974, is an MG BGT. With chrome bumpers, painted wire wheels, a full length sunroof and an overdrive gearbox, this MG has a huge history file with much expenditure and is estimated at £6,500-7,500*
