1899 British Motor Traction Motor Bicycle

Estimate  £-£

Category:

Not registered
Frame number
Engine number 133
The complete machine was manufactured by the British Motor Traction Company
The air cooled 1 ¾ hp engine used a leather belt as a direct drive to the back wheel
We believe that it is probably unique but certainly one of the oldest motor bicycles in existence
It has been on display in the Science Museum since 1933 and is totally untouched and original
The number 1933-404  is marked on the rear mudguard which is probably a museum exhibit number
The British Motor Traction Company was owned by Selwyn Francis Edge
‘SF’ as he was known was a pioneer of motoring and a  successful racing driver
He was also a director of the Ariel Cycle company so it is possible that there may have some association with Ariel to produce the cycle parts of this item
